Tye Conklin beamed with pride while walking around his family-owned Thunder Ridge Ski Area in Patterson and observing dozens of handicapped children experiencing a day in the snow.

Over the weekend of February 28-March 1, 2009, the resort opened its slopes and heart to the Best Day Foundation — an organization that enables children with special needs to experience the thrill of adventure regardless of their challenges.

Noah Schramm, 9, of Cold Spring, enjoyed participating in an obstacle course on the frozen mountain with his crutches. His dad, Mike, called the experience "terrific. Noah was born with cerebral palsy but despite his disability, he is like any other little boy who loves the outdoors. The opportunity has been the highlight of the winter season for us."

Alyssa Rodriguez, 10, of Brewster, also loved the experience. Her mom, Lori, explained that her daughter is autistic. "I love it! Lori is so happy to be on the slopes. We can't begin to thank the great people of Thunder Ridge for their generosity," she said.

Conklin said his family often hears that the fun filled day was the "best day experienced in the child's life. We are so pleased to have played a part in this happening."
