Carmelo Garufi

Carmelo Garufi, age 87, of Cold Spring, died on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, NY.

Born January 7, 1922 in Furci, Messina, Sicily, he was the son of the late Antonio and Rosaria (di Pasquale) Garufi.

Mr. Garufi was a partner in S & A Togs, Inc. in Cold Spring, from 1954 to 1976, and then went on to work as a tailor in the Athletic Department at the United States Military Academy at West Point, retiring in 1986. Mr. Garufi became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1961. He was active in the former Italian American Club, and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Loretto Church in Cold Spring.

He was predeceased by his wife, Concetta (Giachinta) Garufi, in December of 2005 after more than 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his three children, Rosanne Powell of Cold Spring, Anthony Garufi of Cold Spring, and Regina Dauzat of Wappingers Falls; one brother, Angelo Garufi of Palermo Italy; ten grandchildren: Josiah Peparo, Ryan Peparo, Helen Peparo, Anthony Garufi, Amanda Garufi, Samantha Garufi, Robert D'Angelo and wife Donella, James Houston, April Houston, and Christopher Godsey, and many nieces and nephews in Sicily and Milan, Italy. One daughter, Antonia Godsey, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 4 at 10am at Our Lady of Loretto Church, 24 Fair St, Cold Spring, with interment to follow at Cold Spring Cemetery. Friends called on March 3 at the Clinton Funeral Home, Cold Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Garufi's name to Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 14 Cedar St., Cold Spring, NY 10516.
