Float Your Own Kind of Boat at Garrison's Landing Event

Garrison Art Center is celebrating the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's sail up the Hudson with a free community event, "Float Your Boat," in the backyard of the Art Center on Garrison's Landing. Families and kids are invited to create floating sculptures (think Mr. Potato Head on water) using all kinds of found, recycled, and other shipwrecked materials. A talented crew of builders, woodworkers, cabinet makers, artists, and captains are volunteering to collaborate with participants in the creative process. The Garrison Fire Department will provide a pool for testing buoyancy and stability.

David Hardy, executive director of Building Bridges, Building Boats has been helping to plan and organize the day and will help demonstrate how things float. Building commences at noon on Saturday, May 30, at the Art Center on the river's edge. At 2pm the West Point Tuba Quartet will perform and at 3pm the flotilla of finished "crafts" will be launched using the Hudson as a canvas. Kathleen Pemple's band will play starting at 3:30pm.

Participants are asked to bring simple tools (hammer, screw driver, etc.) a picnic lunch, and an extra sandwich for the first mates. RSVP to the Art Center by May 25. Please call 424-3960 or e-mail info.garrisonartcenter.org. Free parking is available at the Garrison Metro North Lot.
