Reflections on the River at Beacon Institute Gallery

Linda Cross: River, 1998, detail, mm on canvas, 54" x 144" Linda Cross: River, 1998, detail, mm on canvas, 54" x 144" Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries is proud to showcase Columbia County artist Linda Cross in an exhibit of mixed media art and drawings at the Institute's gallery at 199 Main Street in Beacon. Reflections on the River will run from November 14 through March 7. The exhibit opens with a free public reception for the artist on Saturday, November 14, from 5- 7pm.

Exhibit curator Linda Stewart observes that Cross' work "delivers an interpretation of more than river, more than that which lies below the water or between its shores." Stewart suggests that as an artist, Cross "translates its language along with its joy, its turbulence and its anger. Her work is a mirror for its moods."

Although Cross' work does not depict specific places, the new reliefs found in this exhibit transition from geographical imagery to a more personal vision. Dark mounds protruding from the surface combined with bold outcroppings are turned on end in a dizzying perspective, creating a visceral dialogue between illusion and reality.

Cross's work for this exhibition has been funded, in part, by a grant from The New York Foundation of the Arts.

Beacon Institute gallery hours are weekdays from 9am- 5pm; Saturdays 11am- 5pm (second Saturdays until 8pm); and Sundays 12- 5pm. For more information call 845- 838-1600 ext 16 or visit www.bire.org.
