Garrison Dads are Our Neighbors to the North
Recently Mrs. Moscati’s third grade class at Garrison School had some special visitors. After studying Canada and the Winter Olympics, two dads who were born in British Columbia, Canada, came to visit.
Mr. Struck (Estella’s dad) was born north of Vancouver in Prince George and spoke of the beautiful Canadian landscape which he is now sharing with his family. He described wonderful campsites and great fishing and hiking spots. Their family even got to attend the 2010 Olympics. He wore a “toque” (which is a warm, close-fitting cap), and described how “beavers” (water planes) are used around Canada as a means of transportation.
Mr. Matkin (Tatiana’s dad) was born in the city of Vancouver and shared childhood hockey stories, and explained about the Canadian glaciers. One goal of the third grade social studies curriculum is to have children compare and contrast life in America to other countries around the world. Visits by parents, grandparents, and even au pairs from around the world, enrich our curriculum and provide a fun way for the children to learn about cultures around the world. Good fun, eh?
