Mercedes Alden

Mercedes Alden, age 90, of Cold Spring, died on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at her residence.

Born on April 30, 1920, in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Whitty) Ahern. She was the widow of the late Thomas D. Alden, Sr. who predeceased her in 1991.

Mrs. Alden was a retired special education teacher for the New York City Board of Education, and was president of the American Women’s Club of Rome, Buenos Aires, and London. She was a member of the Philipstown Garden Club and 30-year area resident.

Survivors include one son, Frederic H. Alden of Paris, France; one daughter Marisa Brenninkmeyer of Winkfield, Adele Reilly of New York, NY; six grandchildren, Kristen, Edward, Coco, Sophia, William, and Thomas; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Nicholas; and her caregivers, Edna and Rocky Chan. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas D. Alden, Jr., in 1999.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at St. John’s Church, Graymoor, in Garrison. Interment will follow in Cold Spring Cemetery.

Family and friends called at the Clinton Funeral Home, in Cold Spring on Tuesday, March 30.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clinton Funeral Home.
