Edith Herbst

Edith (Ryan) Herbst, has passed away at the age of 89. She was born December 6, 1920, in Highbridge (Bronx) NY, to the late Edith (Walls) and Edward F Ryan.

She attended school at PS 73, Bronx, NY, John Adams High School, Bronx, NY, and St. John Hospital, Manhattan, NY.

Edith worked at St. Agnes Hospital, White Plains, as a private duty nurse. She married Herbert A. Herbst, former Phillipstown Tax Assessor, on March 16, l947; he died in 1980.

She is survived by her five children: Celeste Billia and her husband Peter of Lunenburg, MA; Melissa McKenzie and her husband Carl of Johns Creek, GA; Dawn Tucker and her husband David of Wappingers Falls; Christopher Herbst and his wife Valerie of Hubert, NC; and Richard Herbst of Manchester, NH; nine grandchildren, Danielle Shaveet and her husband Nir of Hubbardston, MA; Ryan Billia and his wife Anna of Brooklyn NY; Taylor McKenzie of Johns Creek, GA; Blake and Alexis, Calabrese and Sarah and Scott Tucker of Wappingers Falls; Katie and Haylee Herbst of Hubert NC; and two great grandchildren EdenMarie and Ma’ayan Shaveet of Hubbardson, MA.

She is survived by one brother, Charles Ryan of Long Island, and predeceased by one brother Edward Ryan, of Long Island.

Edith lived in Continental Village for thirty years. She moved to Leominster, MA, in 1988 and Fitchburg in 2005.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010, from 12-1pm, with a service immediately following at the Clinton Funeral Home, 728 North Division Street, Peekskill.

Interment will be at the Hillside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Greater NE Chapter, 101A First Ave. Suite 6, Waltham MA 02451.
