Too Brief a Sunrise: A Look at Philipstown’s First Homicide

Oct. 1843: George Denny, by now an 18-year-old drifter, and one of habitual thievery, was standing trial for the murder of 80-year-old Abraham Wanzer; a charge to which he would plead not guilty. Wanzer had lived on a small plot of acreage in Philipstown, sufficient enough to sustain him and his wife with adequate foodstuffs.
