Haldane kindergarten students joined together with Mrs. Pidala’s eighth grade Home & Career class to bake cookies. The young children had a great time mixing the ingredients together to make their cookies. They used their math prediction skills to decide how many cookies they thought they would be able to make with their dough. The Middle School children and the kindergartners all enjoyed making new friends. The kindergarten students were very surprised to be in a classroom that had ovens in it.

WILDLIFE ASSEMbLY

Bill Robinson presented his World of Animals assembly to the students at Haldane Elementary School. The children had the opportunity to see and learn about a red-tailed hawk, a Harris hawk, a turkey vulture, a large owl, a baby alligator, a legless lizard and a snake.

Grace Campanile holding a snake PHOTO COURTESY HALdANE ScHOOL DISTRIcT The highlight of the program was seeing the redtailed hawk fly around the auditorium and feeling the wind from its flapping wings. Mr. Robinson discussed the importance of birds of prey in the balance of nature, and how man has helped to restore endangered species such as the peregrine falcon.

The children also got to see the owl swallow a rodent in one piece and learned about owl pellets. The explanation of the importance of reptiles in nature was a great way to help avoid fears and misconceptions about them.

Mr. Robinson included humor in his program and he had the children mesmerized from beginning to end. This wonderful and exciting learning experience was made possible through a grant from the Haldane School Foundation.
