Haldane Celebrates Its Sustainable Garden
Students break ground at the Haldane Sustainable Garden.
Photo Provided Celebrate Haldane’s Sustainable Garden by attending its official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 15, at 3:30 at Haldane School, Cold Spring.
Haldane’s Sustainable Garden features several habitat gardens, an herb garden, a sensory garden, a butterfly garden, and raised planters for changing garden projects linked to the curriculum. This year Haldane teachers have been using the garden as part of their curriculum. Diana Geller and Kristin Andersen’s 6th grade special needs class have worked hard all year using the garden on a cross-curricular project; Michelle Hartford’s 4th grade class and Simon Dudar’s 3rd grade class are tending the compost and have educated their classmates on composting in the cafeteria; and Leah Horn’s 6th grade environmental science class has hauled dirt, planted bird attracting shrubs, weeded and watered each afternoon this spring.
The Garden project began three years ago when several parents proposed a school garden plan that included site evaluation, landscape designs, and possible curriculum ideas to the Haldane Administration. The administration, particularly Elementary and Middle School Principal Maggie Davis, enthusiastically supported the plan, which was then approved by Board of Education.
The garden is sponsored by the PTA and has received generous funding from the Haldane School Foundation and the Hudson Highland Land Trust. The garden has also received help from the Philipstown and Highland Garden Clubs, Glynwood Farm, and many parents and community members.
Please come and celebrate the great start of Haldane’s Sustainable Garden!
