Lost Hikers Found Deep in Garrison Woods Unharmed

By ERIC GROSS

Three hikers from New York City out for a New Year’s Day excursion in the wilds of Putnam County were safely located Sunday night after becoming lost in a wooded area off Route 403 in Garrison.

The Putnam County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center in Carmel received a transferred cell phone call from Orange County around 5 pm from one of the lost hikers reporting that she, a friend and his eight-year-old son had become lost following a hike in the woods.

Members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Department were notified along with the Garrison and Continental Village Fire Departments, Philipstown and Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services.

Chief Sheriff’s Investigator Gerald Schramek said when the emergency responders arrived on the scene, a “command post was established. Calls were made for a police canine unit from Westchester as well as a helicopter from the NYPD.”

Schramek said the frightening tale had a happy ending when at 9 pm, the police canine team consisting of Sgt. Chris Simone, Officer Brian Tierney and his canine partner, Saratoga, located the three hikers. With the assistance of firefighters and deputies, the trio was escorted from the woods to awaiting ambulances.

Schramek said the hikers were evaluated by attending EMTs and paramedics but refused further medical attention: “They walked to their parked car and left to return to their home in the Big Apple.”

Sheriff Don Smith late Sunday night expressed his appreciation to the emergency personnel who worked as a team to find the hikers: “Every minute counts when finding lost or missing people. The sooner they can be located the better the chance that they will be unharmed.”

The identities of the trio were not released.
