Haldane Bus Stop Incident Draws Police

Officers watch for suspicious activity
Eric Gross

Undercover officers from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department patrolled school bus stops in Cold Spring this week following an incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

Haldane School officials explained that as a student exited the bus on Barrett Pond Road, the child passed a parked car and an individual seated inside was perceived by the youngster as waving, to come toward the car.

The child ran home and parents immediately notified police and school officials, who contacted school bus drivers via two-way radios to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. Haldane on Wednesday alerted parents via the district's  alert system.

Captain William McNamara of the Sheriff's Department told the PCNR Thursday afternoon that since "no words were exchanged nor was the occupant of the vehicle aggressive in any way towards the child, the incident could have been misconstrued. Undercover deputies staked out bus stops throughout the day both Wednesday and Thursday and found nothing related to the incident."
