Is there a Doctor in the House?

Hayworth promotes glaucoma testing in Putnam stop
Eric Gross

She's not called Dr. Nan Hayworth for nothing!

The congresswoman, who represents constituents in the 19th district that includes all of Putnam County as well as sections of Westchester, Dutchess, Orange and Rockland, visited Putnam Hospital Center Wednesday where she observed a series of glaucoma screenings in recognition of National Glaucoma Awareness and National Eye Care Month. Prior to being elected to Congress two years ago, Hayworth practiced ophthalmology for 16 years.
Hayworth was thrilled to be "back in my old home territory. Glaucoma is a silent killer of vision. Unless people have testing they will typically not have any symptoms until it becomes too late. Every man and woman should be screened annually for glaucoma if they are aged 50 or above."
Should a person be diagnosed with glaucoma, Hayworth said several remedies exist: "There is medication, lasers or surgical procedures. The most important thing to remember is that ways exist to treat glaucoma. Vision loss is totally unnecessary."
Screenings were performed last Wednesday by members of the PHC staff in conjunction with students from the New York Medical College.
One young woman, Lissy Szalkiewicz of Putnam Valley, beamed when Hayworth congratulated her for performing the screening in a "highly professional" manner.
