'The Birds' at Butterfield

By ANNIE CHESNUT

Recently Leslie Heanue, of the Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Philipstown, sent us this photo of turkey vultures decking the antennae at Butterfield Hospital. The vultures, nature’s cleaning crew, seem to have camped in Cold Spring, and these  carrion-cleaners can be seen most days either on the hospital’s aerial extensions or in nearby trees.

Teatown Lake Reservation, located off the southbound Taconic at Route 133, provides rehabilitation for injured vultures, who are sometimes the victims of angry or careless drivers—and is featuring a “Vulture Venture” on January 14 from 11am to 12 noon. Call 914-762-2912, ext. 110 for more info and to make a reservation.
