Carol Christine Fripp Hanna

Carol Christine Fripp Hanna passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. Carol was born on December 22, 1923, to Fred and Salome Coleman Fripp, of St. Helena Island, who were on the faculty of the then existing Penn School.

Carol’s first through twelfth grade education was received from Penn Normal, Industrial and Agricultural School. She went on to earn degrees at Bennett College for Women and New York University and completed the nursing program at Meharry Medical College. The final years of her career were spent in New York, as a Nursing Administrator of Pediatrics, at the University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, in New York City. In 1971, Carol married Eugene Levi Hanna, with whom she shared the remainder of her life, first in New York City, then Cold Spring.

Carol and Gene retired to her beloved St. Helena Island, and quickly became a part of Island life. She was a faithful member of the Penn Club and volunteered for many Penn Center projects and programs. She was active in the Lands End Woodlands Organization following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather who were among the Organization’s founders. Carol also volunteered on a regular basis at the local Red Piano Too Art Gallery, and was an active member of the Savannah-Beaufort Lowcountry Chapter of the Bennett College Alumnae Association.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 40 years, Gene; her son, Allan Eugene Hanna; her two daughters Alexandra Christine Harris, and Shalia Taron Cole; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held January 7 at the Bethesda Christian Fellowship Church, St. Helena Island, SC. ChisholmGalloway Home for Funerals is in charge.
