Haldane Basketball Teams Advance in Sectionals

by STEPHEN SCHWEIKHART

In a rare home post season doubleheader, both the girls and boys basketball teams advanced to the sectional semi-finals with convincing wins on Tuesday night.

The girls opened the evening with a convincing 57-27 decision over a clearly out manned Palisades Prep team. Rose Mackey had a career-high 23 points, while Alex Monteleone chipped in with 13. The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the games' opening two minutes and were never seriously challenged.

After the girls' win, the boys took to the floor and proceeded to thump Hamilton 52-32. Wil Hoffmann scored 13 points in the win, and Elias Lopez added 12. The game featured a near brawl in the second half when both benches cleared after some heated play. Fortunately, the situation was diffused and there were no ejections.

The wins punched both teams' tickets to the County Center for semi-final match ups with top seeded juggernauts. The girls face a 16-2 Hamilton squad that will be looking to avenge last year's loss to the Blue Devils in the sectional title game. Hamilton and Haldane had only one foe in common this past season - Pawling. While the Blue Devils managed to defeat the Tigers twice (by 11 and 16 points respectively), Hamilton laid waste to the Pawling squad in their only meeting, winning by 69 points, 96-27.

The boys face an undefeated Tuckahoe squad that has scored 100 points in three consecutive games, including Tuesday night's 100-35 win over Lincoln Hall. Two weeks ago, Lincoln Hall rallied to knock off the Blue Devils on Senior Night.

Needless to say, both Haldane squads will have their work cut out for them when they hit the County Center floor. The boys' game is Monday (2/27), with tip off set for 6:15pm, while the girls' game is Tuesday (2/28) with a tentative 4:45pm start time.
