Sr. Mary Martin Jennings, SA

Sister Mary Martin (Ellen Mary) Jennings, a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement from Graymoor, died on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Residence at St. Francis Convent, Garrison, NY. She was 92 years old. Sister Mary Martin was born in New York City, NY. She was the daughter of Ellen (Condron) and John Jennings.

Sister joined the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement (Graymoor) at Garrison, NY, on September 8, 1940. She professed her first vows on June 12, 1942, and her final vows on August 23, 1947. As an Atonement missionary, she served in parish, catechetical, pastoral and retreat ministries in the United States: Rockland, ME; Morrisonville, NY (1951/52); Alamosa, CO; Shohola, PA; Bakersfield, CA; Washington Retreat House, Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Schuylerville, NY (1978/79); Hogansburg, NY (1980/81); and Port Leyden, NY (1984/85). Sister also served in Assisi, Italy and in Rossinver, Ireland, and at St. Francis Convent (Garrison, NY) over many years since 1960.

Sister is predeceased by her three brothers: Martin, John and Joseph, and her two sisters: Anne Stenerson and Mary Parchen. Sister is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Sister’s wake service was held on Sunday, May 6, 2012, in the Motherhouse Chapel and her funeral Mass was on Monday, May 7, 2012. Her burial was in the Sisters’ Cemetery at Graymoor. In lieu of flowers, Sister has requested a donation be made to the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement for their ministries.
