Get Ready For New York Heritage Weekend
New York Heritage Weekend 2012 is almost here.
On May 19th and 20th, more than 180 events will be held from New York City, north to the Canadian border, to Buffalo and all points near and far. Heritage Weekend features special programs, lectures, tours, re-enactments, and discounted admission at heritage and cultural destinations throughout New York State.
Heritage Weekend celebrates national, state or local heritage. Historic sites, museums, architecturally significant buildings, battlefields, and historic districts are just some of the venues where you can expect to find Heritage Weekend events.
Heritage Weekend showcases the diverse heritage of New York State including: military history, arts and culture, corridor of commerce, innovation, architecture, freedom and dignity, traditions and cultures, and community heritage.
Here is a sampling of events in the Lower Hudson Valley:
• Take a 3 hour history hike (5/19-20) through the normally closed-to-the public Iona Island, where historian and naturalist Doc Bayne will tell the cultural, agricultural and military history of the Island. Event is limited, call for reservations.
• Explore New Paltz’s rich history dating back to the settlement of the Huguenots in the 1600’s along the historic Rail Trail (5/19). Stop along the way to visit the local businesses in the heart of the village as well as capture some magnificent views of the Shawangunk Ridge.
• Join the Newburgh Preservation Association (5/19-20) in a free, guided walking tour of the city’s historic landmarks. Tours are offered on both days and a donation to the NPA is encouraged.
• This year Heritage Weekend will kick off a special event At Your Service: Behind the Scenes at Vanderbilt Mansion (5/19-20). Participants will be assigned a role of a family servant and learn about the meticulous running of the Vanderbilt household as they tour rarely seen sites of the home from behind the scenes.
With more than 180 events being offered this year, there is something for everyone! To find events near you visit www.HeritageWeekend.org.
New York Heritage Weekend is presented by the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, in partnership with Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, I Love New York and sponsored by more than 150 organizations hosting Heritage Weekend events throughout New York State.
