Local Poll: Debates to Affect Votes for President

By Douglas Cunningham

Almost half of respondents in a local poll said the presidential debates could affect their vote in November.

The poll, at PutnamCountyBugler.com, found that 47 percent said the debates could affect their vote, while 53 percent said the debates would not. Two more debates between President Barack Obama and his challenger, Gov. Mitt Romney, are scheduled, for Oct. 16 on Long Island and Oct. 22 in Florida.

Romney is widely regarded to have won their first encounter Oct. 3, and his performance has energized Republicans as Election Day approaches.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan are set to face off this Thursday evening in Kentucky, covering both foreign and domestic policy.

The importance of debates to the national race comes as the PCN&R’s own Candidates Forum approaches. It’s set for 7 p.m. Oct. 22, a Monday, at Haldane, and most candidates have confirmed they will attend. The PCN&R will provide refreshments.
