PCN&R: It Was a Very Good Year

Advertising is stable with some categories showing increases, subscriptions and newsstand sales are growing modestly and views at the newspaper’s website are up dramatically, owner and Publisher Elizabeth Ailes reports.

Those are the key points in a year-end review of the newspaper that Mrs. Ailes recently completed. She thanked advertisers for their continued faith in the paper, as well as readers for their high civic commitment. She noted that economic conditions remain difficult, but expressed hope that at least some improvement in conditions will be forthcoming.

In 2012, the newspaper added a new employee and plans to add one more, and it added additional correspondents during the year, as well. Also in 2012, the newspaper successfully redesigned PCNR. com and launched its new community website, putnamcountybugler.com, which has drawn steady traffic. Views at PNCR.com are up hugely, which Mrs. Ailes attributed to frequent updating of the site and improved navigation, as well the availability of civic meeting videos. The newspaper also committed to making urgent public safety stories, such as during Hurricane Sandy, as free access, part of a public service commitment to the community.

Mrs. Ailes owns and publishes both the News & Recorder, which covers western Putnam County, and the Putnam County Courier, in eastern Putnam. Their websites are at pcnr.com and putnamcountycourier.com. She said that any and all profits at the newspaper enterprise will continue to be invested in the newspaper and its web products, as well as to continue extensive contributions to local charities and scholarships for local students.
