On Dirt Roads & Dust
To the Editor: Roman emperors wanted roads paved that were usable at all times. The Appian Way is 350 miles long and goes from Rome to the Adriatic Sea. It was built in 312 B.C. The engineering design and construction justify the cost after 2325 years. Roman engineering was good. Caesar had a bridge built over the Rhine River in one week.
