George William ‘Weezer’ Van Tassel, Sr.

George William “Weezer” Van Tassel, Sr., age 81, of Cold Spring, died on Sunday, July 28th, 2013, at the NY State Veterans Home at Montrose.

Born May 2, 1932, in Cold Spring, he was the son of the late Frederick and Anna E. (Wesley) Van Tassel.

Mr. Van Tassel was a retired operating engineer for Local #137, Briarcliff Manor, having worked for Joseph Percacciolo and Sons in Cold Spring. He retired in 1994. A lifelong resident of Cold Spring, he graduated from Haldane High School in 1951, served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954, and was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of SGT First Class. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Combat Infantrymen’s Badge.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Loretto Church and charter member of the North Highland Engine Co. 1 with 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa M. (Percacciolo) Van Tassel. They were married June 29, 1957, at Our Lady of Loretto Church. He is also survived by three children; George W. (Laura) Van Tassel of Leesburg, Va.; Teresa M. (Michael) Lyons of Hopewell Junction; and John J. (Kristin) Van Tassel of Cold Spring. Six grandchildren, Amanda Van Tassel, Michael and Hilary Lyons, Gabrielle, Kevin, and Ryan Van Tassel, also survive. He was predeceased by one grandson, Benjamin Van Tassel, and three brothers; Frederick Van Tassel, John Roberts, and Lester Roberts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 1st at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Loretto Church, 24 Fair Street, Cold Spring, followed by interment in Cold Spring Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Clinton Funeral Home, Cor. of Parrott & Pine Sts (21 Parrott St) Cold Spring, NY 10516 on Wednesday, July 31st from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Van Tassel’s name to NYS Veterans Home, 290 Albany Post Road, Montrose, NY 10548 or to North Highlands Engine Co. 1, 504 Fishkill Rd, Cold Spring, NY 10516.
