James W. “Butch” Tangen

James W. “Butch” Tangen, age 84 of Cold Spring, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023, at the New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.

He was born on May 3, 1938, to John Louis Tangen and Mary C. Rose Tangen of Verplanck. He attended school at Verplanck elementary and Hendrick Hudson High School. On October 19, 1974, her married Karen A. Fincham in Cold Spring at the United Methodist Church.

He was employed as a machinist at Edna-Lite Corp in Peekskill and Hudson Wire in Ossining for over 60 years. He worked at Glynwood Center as a handy-man until his retirement in 2000.

He was an avid gardener who happily shared his harvest of vegetables with friends and family. His hobbies were woodworking, making many wooden crosses that he gave to others, and raising canaries which he entered into shows, winning many ribbons and trophies, but he liked it best when he sold them to local families as pets. He also enjoyed fishing and shared many stories with us.

He is survived by his wife Karen of 49 years; a daughter, Stephanie (Sean) Lucy; a son, Scott (Janelle) Tangen; five grandchildren, Kayla, Garrett, Emmelyn, James and Cole; a brother, John (Diane) of Buchanan; nieces, Libby (Frank) Laduca, Joanne (Hank, pre-deceased) Santis, Chistine (Ed) Hansen, J.T. (Caitlyn) Tangen. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Betty (Harold) Kane, Donna (Darrell) Duheme, Kathy (Richard) Keller, Joanna (Jenny) Fincham; his brothers-in-law, Haywood (Roe), Randy (Cindy), Charlie (Deborah), Robert (Ellen), David (Pat), Paul (Michael) Fincham; many nieces and nephews: Joseph (Alex), Danyell (Jimmy), Katelyn (Robb), Brian (Jackie), Casey (Jared), Ryan (Chelsea), Kristen, James, Joseph, Ryan, Eric, Tripp, Kiera, Victoria, Lizzie, Ellie, Gemma, Rue and Quinn.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. We love him and will miss him.

Butch will be cremated and there will be no services per his wishes. A Celebration of Life service will be planned for the future.
